How the F*ck to Get Unstuck

motivation Oct 02, 2017

The other day, I was listening to a podcast interview with Rob Kosberg, a best-selling author, speaker, and the founder of BestSellerPublishing.org. Rob is one of the most sought-after experts on how to write, publish, and promote books that land on various best-selling lists across the world.

And he's got the kind of income that would make those of you with money shit...

well...

shit yourselves.

The podcast episode itself wasn’t all that impressive, but towards the end of the interview, Rob said this one phrase that literally made me hit rewind 5 times just so that I could hear it again. If it were anyone else listening, they probably would have missed it because it was just a quick phrase he uttered before moving on with the interview.

But when I heard it, I couldn’t help but pull into a parking lot, bust out my journal, and frantically begin to write an outline that ultimately became this blog post.

I'll share that little piece of gold with you in just a second, but first I'm gonna lay the groundwork so that you can truly appreciate the value bomb that I'm about to unload on you.

Here's what I see happening...

I’ve spent hours and hours chatting with my readers, either through email, Zoom chats, Facebook Messenger, and in my private Facebook community reserved for my students.

And I’m beginning to see a common theme.

I know that you have some badass goals for your practice that go way beyond a full caseload.

You’ve talked to me about...

creating online courses,

being featured on the most well-known blogs and podcasts in your niche,

and being able to create multiple income streams so that you can bypass trading your time for money and start earning passive income on the side.

When I've ask you about your WHY (your dream behind these badass goals), you’ve said things like,

“I want to be able to only work 3 days a week so that I can spend more time with my family.”

“I want the flexibility to meet a friend for coffee on a random Tuesday at 10am.”

"I want to give my student loans the big middle finger so that I don't have to feel trapped by them anymore."

“I want to be able to afford to take a lavish vacation and pay for it in cash.”

But I’ve also noticed something else about you.

You have these big-ass dreams and goals, but when you start to break them down to see what you need to be doing right now to get there, you get stuck.

I’m talkin’ Five-o-clock-on-a-Friday-and-you’re-on-your-way-to-an-awesome-weekend-getaway-with-your-entire-family-when-you-hit-this-amazing-clusterfuck-of-nonsense stuck.

hundreds of cars in bumper to bumper traffic

You have NO FUCKING CLUE what you need to be doing right now to get you even one step closer to that dream you have, and it leaves you feeling paralyzedfrustrated, and pissed off at yourself.

You see all these other people who seem to have their shit together. They've taken your newsfeed hostage with their compelling ads for their high-dollar programs, newest book, and latest featured article on that huge site you dream of writing for...

Then you say to yourself,

"one day..."

Yeah, when you finally figure out how to get there.

So here's where where I drop that value bomb so hard on you that you get goosebumps when you realize how simple it actually is to get to that dream.

(Don't read it too fast or you'll miss it.)

When asked what advice he had for anyone listening to the podcast interview, Rob Kosberg said the following:

"Whatever your dream is…for crying out loud, just do it.
Just take the steps – the imperfect action – because you’ll never know in 2 years, 3, years or 5 years, where you could actually be if you don’t get started today."

Imperfect Action.

Holy fuckballs.

If I had heard this phrase when I first got the idea for Your Badass Therapy Practice 5 years ago, I probably wouldn't have even realized how perfectly it describes what I needed to be doing at the time.

If you've been eyeballing the end goal you have for yourself and your practice but have felt completely lost about where to start, here's your answer:

It doesn't.
Fucking.
Matter.

JUST START SOMEWHERE.

Rob would have NEVER guessed that, by putting one foot in front of the other, pivoting when necessary, and trying out different shit, he would have eventually created a multimillion dollar business.

But he was committed to taking imperfect action - tiny steps that would ultimately get him where he wanted to be, even if it wasn't a straight path.

As a Type-A, driven, ambitious, and feisty ESFJ, the idea of imperfect action was a hard pill for me to swallow. I want a detailed plan laid out so that I can follow it step-by-step and check the boxes as I go, thus ensuring my success.

But if I had waited for that, I would still be sitting here at my computer 9 months later "researching" how to create an online business.

Do you see that?

I had to take imperfect action to get here. And thank God I did, because now I'm closer than I've ever been to reaching the big-ass dreams I have.

And I've had SO MUCH fun along the way.

So here's my advice to you.

Don't be afraid to take imperfect action towards you goal.

Just start.

You can always change course along the way or do something differently. You always have the option to pivot.

But first you have to start.

Imperfect action allows you to reach your goal without having to worry about doing everything exactly by-the-book or in the exact right order.

So just fucking start.

TODAY.

Comment below and share your big-ass goal, along with the ONE THING you're going to do today or this week to get started.
